It is a perennial herb that grows up to a height of 50 cm with a hard, unbranched rhizome. Its underground rhizome is hard, slightly brown and lightly white with ring-like symbols; the inner part is white and dissolves as dust when chewed. The rhizome is usually about 1 cm in radius and 5–8 cm long. The leaves (4–9) are in a whorl at the top of the stem, lanceolate, long pointed, and dark green. Flowers are solitary and yellowish in color. Flowering and fruiting occur in April-May (Baisakh – Jestha).
