It is a terrestrial, perennial, tuberous orchid that grows to a height of 30–60 cm. Its underground tuberous roots are typically 3–5 lobed, resembling fingers, pale yellow to brown externally and white and fleshy internally. The leaves are large, oblanceolate, petioled, often spotted with purple, 5–30 cm long and 2–4 cm wide. It produces striking pink to purple flowers arranged in a dense spike. A single mature plant yields a fresh tuber of about 2.5 g (0.64 g when dried). Flowering: June- July (Asar-Shrawan). Fruiting: July-August (Shrawan-Bhadra).
