It is a perennial herb that grows to a height of 1.5–1.8 m. Its underground rhizome and roots are the marketable parts. The rhizome is thick, woody, and brown, with a sour taste. The leaves are simple, alternate, radical with petioles 30–45 cm long. Flowers are small and dark reddish purple in long, much branched, straight panicles. Fruits are ovoid, oblong, purple, and 3-winged. The petioles are sour and eaten as pickles. Flowering in June – September (Asar – Bhadra).
