Kalo Satuwa – कालो सतुवा

It is a perennial herb that grows up to 30 cm in height. Its underground rhizome is small, knobby, and contains trillarin (which yields diosgenin). The plant has three leaves in one whorl at the apex of the stem – leaves are broadly ovate and acute, with a conspicuous petiole. It produces a central, purplish-brown flower with 3 sepals, 3 petals, and 6 stamens. The fruit is a red globule berry (1–2 cm in diameter). Flowering in May-June (Jestha-Asar).
