It is a perennial, erect, herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 60–150 cm. It possesses a tuberous root system consisting of a pair of conical or carrot-shaped roots (one shriveled, one plump).The root is bitter in taste, 1–1.5 cm in diameter tapering towards the end, with brown bark and small emerging roots. The leaves are petioled, circular, palmately lobed, hairy, and divided. It produces showy, spurred, blue to purplish-blue flowers arranged in long, terminal racemes. Flowering: July-August (Bhadra-Asoj).
