It is a small, perennial herb with a creeping rhizome. Its underground rhizome is bitter in tastel tortuous, about 60 cm long, bears prominent leaf scars, and roots from the nodes. The leaves are all basal, spatula-shaped to oblong, with toothed margins and short petioles. The flowering stem is taller than the leaves and bears a dense spike of small, blue- violet to purplish-blue flowers. Flowering in June-August (Asar- Bhadra).
