Yarsagumba is distributed throughout the high Himalayan and trans Himalayan regions of Nepal, occurring primarily in alpine meadows and grasslands. The species has been reported from 28 northern districts of Nepal. The highest concentrations and most productive habitats are found in western and northwestern Himalayan districts, mainly Dolpa, Darchula, Humla, Mugu and Jumla.
