It is an erect, perennial herb that grows to a height of 60–120 cm. Its underground rootstock (rhizome) is sweet in taste, fleshy, and bears leaf scars. The leaves are small, in whorls of 4–8, sessile, linear or lanceolate. Flowers are white, in whorled racemes, clusters of 2–3, pendulous and tubular. Fruits are berries, bright red turning dark purple. Flowering and fruiting occur in May-August (Jestha-Bhadra).
